Double cleansing is basically washing your face twice. The first wash you would use an oil based cleanser to remove any excess makeup build up, SPF or dirt/pollution that maybe on the surface of the skin. The second wash is a deeper cleanse using a water based cleanser which removes sweat, bacteria and old skin cells. Not cleansing your skin properly contributes to ageing, pigmentation and breakouts and nobody likes that. Double cleansing is a self-care gift for your skin. If you wear makeup quite frequently, sunscreen or are exposed to dirt and pollution (which most of us are) you should to try double cleansing. Sometimes we come home in the evening from a night out and use makeup removing wipes to remove makeup from our skin and maybe do a quick wash, this is not sufficient to cleanse the skin hence you might need to double cleanse. As a starting point though, it’s important to understand your skin type (dry, oily, normal, combination etc.) as well as any key issues that you experience for example acne, breakouts, hyper pigmentation etc. because that will help you to identify and use the right products that target those issues and address your skin concerns.
Double cleansing became a trend with the K-beauty (Korean Beauty) 10 step skin care process which as you can imagine with 10 steps is quite intense and is broken down as follows: (I haven’t tried the full 10 step process, I have just picked the ones that I thought would help me and double cleansing was one of them).
- Remove makeup & wash with an oil cleanser
- Wash with a water based cleanser
- Essences are lightweight and are a concentrated blend that offers hydration, anti-aging and complexion enhancing ingredients
- Treatments are basically serums that target specific issues that you may be experiencing on your skin like acne, hyper pigmentation etc.
- Sheet Masks infuse into your skin and offer concentrated moisture and nutrients
- Eye Cream
- Sun Protection
This post is just focusing on the Cleanse part because I found that when I am wearing makeup and sunscreen, my skin wasn’t fully clean with just one cleanse. Below is how you can double cleanse:
- Wash 1
Firstly you have to remove your makeup if you are wearing any. You then take the oil based cleanser and rub it onto your skin, it helps to remove any excess oil, sunscreen and breakdown makeup that may be left on your skin. You then rinse it off your face. I found this step to be so important to cleanse off all the dirt and product that is basically sitting on the surface of your skin. Below are a few recommended oil cleansers, Dermalogica Precleanse, Avene Calm Cleansing Oil and Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil:
- Wash 2
The second wash is not a quick splash of water, you have to take the time to massage the cleanser into your skin to ensure that your face is completely cleansed. Make sure that you use lukewarm water when cleansing.
There isn’t always enough time to pull off a double cleanse so it’s best to try and do a double cleanse in the evenings. Also be careful not to overdo it and strip your skin of its essential oils and if you’re using an exfoliator, find a gentle one for your skin. Below are a few water based cleansers, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Cleanser, Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Cleanser and Kiehls Ultra Facial Cleanser:
