let’s talk beauty with keabe mautla

Keabe Mautla is a fashion blogger with an amazing sense of style and a gorgeous face to match. We awkwardly met at Zara at Mall of Africa only to find out that we have mutual friends who are sisters. I asked Keabe if she I could feature her for my first Let’s Talk Beauty Interview and she graciously accepted. She has gorgeous skin and rocks the bald look enviably. Keabe shared with me her beauty routine and habits and please get comfy, it’s a lengthy read.

What is your morning cleansing routine?

In the morning I jump into the shower because I’m usually running late (a bad habit I’ve committed to change in 2018) then I’ll cleanse, tone and moisturize and brush my teeth.

Do you bath or shower?

I shower more than I bath because I’m constantly running late and it’s quicker and more convenient. But on days when I’m not in a rush and looking to pamper myself I’ll soak in the bath tub with bath salts, oils and lots of bubbles. I prefer a good bath soak to a shower.

Do you use body wash or soap? Or both?

I use both.

Which body wash or soap brands are your favourite? Why?

Nivea Pampering Shower Oil is super luxurious and smells divine. It’s made up of 55% natural oils and leaves my skin feeling pampered.

Lux Tempting Whisper Body Wash and Soap smells like an enchanted garden. The peony and ylang-ylang scents smell like heaven.

Body Shop Pink Grapefruit is another one of my favourites which smells so fresh and leaves me invigorated and ready to start my day right.

Manual or electric toothbrush?

I’m old school and like my manual toothbrush. I don’t like the feeling of an electric toothbrush and I always feel like the circular head of the brush is too small. I haven’t looked into the newer electric toothbrushes so I may find something I like but I’m happy with my manual toothbrush.

Do you use mouth wash? Which brand?

Yes, Listerine Cool Mint or Freshburst are my go to mouth washes. I love that extra clean feeling it gives me. I imagine my plaque and germs being blasted away!

What is your face care routine?

I’m not as meticulous as I used to be with my facial routine. I cleanse twice a day, usually tone, moisturize and apply sun screen in the morning. In the evening I will cleanse and moisturize, then I will follow up with some treatment of my spots and some eye cream.

What brands do you use and why?

In the morning I cleanse with Pure Soap which is a pure glycerine soap bar. My dermatologist prescribed this to me when I first started going years ago, and I’ve just stuck with it since. Only recently did I start using toner. I’ve always felt like toners are too harsh on my skin and strip my face of its natural oils. I hated that feeling so I’d skip toner. I read about witch hazel and rosewater as a gentle, natural toner which restores the pH balance of your skin, so that’s what I use now. I really enjoy testing natural products because you know exactly what you’re putting on your skin. The witch hazel and rose water is a no name brand from Dischem. I then moisturize with Estee Lauder Daywear Matte, and once absorbed I’ll use suncreen. The higher the better. My faves which don’t leave me grey are Dermopal Moisturizing Sunscreen and Bioderman Photderm Max. I try buy the highest sun protection factor I can find.

Do you alternate brands or products in different seasons?

Yes. In winter my skin isn’t oily so I skip the Estate Lauder Daywear Matte and wear products which lock in moisture. I particularly like the Skin Creamery Facial Hydrating Oil with jojoba, melon seed and baobab. It absorbs well into my skin and doesn’t leave any oily residue. I believe skin that will be facing harsh elements in winter needs to be protected a little more.

Do you use serum? What do they help you address? Do they make a difference?

Yes I used Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair serum. I definitely feel the difference the next morning. My skin is softer to the touch and it feels hydrated and plumper. I haven’t been using this for long enough to notice a long term difference. Then again, I don’t have wrinkles yet anyways.

Do you use masks? Regularly or just tried them?

I am always on the lookout for a nourishing skin mask. I use a mixture of bentonite clay, witch hazel and rosewater on my face when I feel I need a pick me up. It tightens my pores and leaves my skin feeling taunt. I also use The Body Shop’s Tea Tree 3 in 1. It’s a wash, scrub and mask. If I don’t have enough time to leave the mask on I’ll use it as a scrub to plough away dead, dull skin cells. It creates this minty like tingling sensation. It’s lovely!

Do you use lotion or cream? Which brand?

The Body Shop Body Butter & Skin Creamery Everyday Cream

Do you use the same lotion/cream throughout the year or alternate during seasons?

Same brand yes, but I may opt for a body butter for very dry skin in winter and a body butter for normal skin during summer. I may also add some Bio Oil or Vitamin E Oil in the winter to combat those super dry areas.

Do you use oils? Sprays? Body serums? Or any other premium formats

On days when I am looking for my legs or arms to shimmer, or I’m shooting looks for my blog, I’ll wear The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil. It’s non greasy and gives my skin a bronzed looked.

What is your daily hair routine?

In December I decided to relax my hair and do something a little different as opposed to the brush cut I’ve been wearing for the past few years. My routine has changed drastically and I’m wondering how long I’ll last with my hair like this. I’m used to a quick in and out at the hair salon and little to no maintenance so I’ve had to re-teach myself how to look after my hair. It’s quite a task.

How often do you wash your hair?

With my brush cut I would condition my scalp every 2nd or 3rd day with Tresemme Botanique Conditioner and shampoo once a week. Even though I had no hair I always took care of my scalp for when I did decide to grow my hair. Now that I have a little more hair, it’s still very short, but there’s more to manage. I shampoo and condition weekly, and follow it up with a wrap and high protein serum. I also use a protein hair mask regularly.

What products do you use on your hair?

Tresemme Botanique Shampoo and Conditioner. I love this range of products. It’s low in sulfates, has no parabens and silicone and smells really good.

  • Dr Miracles Daily Anti- Breakage Strengthening Creme
  • Palmers Olive Oil Super control gel for my edges. (I’m looking for something else because this cakes and leaves flakes on my hairline. Not cool!)
  • Cantu Deep Treatment Masque
  • Design Essentials Serum

I also want to incorporate more natural products into my hair routine like black castor oil, coconut oil and olive oil.

How often do you do your nails or get your nails done?

I usually get my nails done once a month or more if one breaks or they look a mess

Where do you get your nails done?

The Nail Pod (@thenailpod on Instagram)

Acrylics or Gelish or normal nail polish

For length and protecting my nails I use Acrylic and for colour Gelish. This combo makes my nails last longer and I believe my nails are healthy because they’re protected and I simply let them be.

What is your daily makeup routine?

I don’t wear makeup every day, but if I do I may use a little foundation, some bronzer, mascara and lip gloss.

Do you wear lipstick? Matte or Gloss?

Yes. Both. I prefer gloss for everyday looks because matte lipstick can be super drying. Then trying to reapply on already dry lips just looks a mess. So I’ll keep matte for events or when I know I won’t be out for long, and gloss for everday looks.

Which lipstick brand is your favourite?

MAC Cosmetics and Makeup Forever.

Which colour is your go to lipstick colour?

For daily use I love MACs Velvet Teddy and Makeup Forever’s N14 for an everyday nude look

How do you keep your lips soft in winter?

Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream or just plain old Vaseline. I also brush my lips when they start looking cracked and in need of some tlc. An old toothbrush usually does the trick.

Liner or mascara or both?

It depends how I’m feeling and the look I’m going for. For summer I’ve been playing around with different colour liners and absolutely love a red liner on my upper lash line for a little fun. And blue mascara. I like taking risks and having a little fun with my makeup. And if I’m not feeling it I can simply wash it off and start again.

What fragrance do you use daily?

I used to used to use Giorgio Armani Si and when I’m feeling a little summery I’d use Marc Jacobs Daisy. They ran out and I didn’t bother to restock. I’ve started looking for a more limited scents to wear and I’m moving away from the usual designer fragrances, even though there are a few I really like. I’m currently going through samples from Saint d’Ici to discover what I like the most and would also like to visit Jo Malone to play with their fragrances.

What is your favourite fragrance?

My favourite fragrance of all time is Hermes eau des Merveilles. It’s a complete dream! I imagine that is what the inside of their Hermes store in Paris smells like.

Do you alternate your fragrances in the different seasons?

Yes in summer I prefer more floral scents and in the winter more woody and moody fragrances
